TBS Treatment

What is Theta Burst Stimulation?

Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS) is a relatively new form of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), being described in 2005 and initially used for stimulation of the motor cortex in humans. Treatment of depression using TBS is relatively new with studies from 2014 showing TBS to be superior to sham stimulation with an adverse effects profile comparable to sham stimulation. Further, TBS for depression treatment has been established as equally efficacious and safe compared to high frequency rTMS.

Theta Burst Stimulation is a patterned form of rTMS. The standard theta burst pattern consists of three bursts of pulses given at 50Hz and repeated every 200 ms.

The Same Fantastic Results as TMS in Less Time

With its reduced treatment time of just 6 minutes, TBS depression treatment allows for a higher throughput of patients compared to what is possible with the standard rTMS protocol of 37 minutes. Clinics offering TBS treatment can thus treat 5 times more patients with Theta Burst than with conventional rTMS treatment making TBS depression treatments more cost-effective.

TBS Depression Treatment Summarized:

• Shorter, more cost-effective 6 minutes Theta Burst protocol
• Same efficacy as 10Hz rTMS standard protocol
• CE-approved for major depression

The TMS Center of South West Florida Proudly Offers Both rTMS and TBS Treatment for Treatment-Resistant Depression.
